About Portland:
Portland spans 4.5 miles by 1.5 miles and sits opposite Weymouth. It is joined to the mainland by the 18 mile Chesil Beach from which local fishermen launch their boats daily.
The Island itself is bathed in history. In the North, just below Ocean Views, lies Portland Castle, a fortress built by Henry VIII to defend Weymouth from attacks by the French and Spanish. Behind Ocean Views sits the Verne Citadel, an imposing fortress which encloses 56 acres of land, built in 1847 as a temporary building for prisoners constructing the breakwater.
The island’s famous quarries, from which Portland Stone was hewn to construct St Paul’s Cathedral, are situated above Fortuneswell in the centre of the island.
To the South lies Portland Bill, with its towering red and white lighthouse and the famous Pulpit Rock at its Western Edge.
