Third Annual “Run For Young” To Be Held On Saturday, Jan. 9

5K Race To Raise Awareness of Youth Drinking and Driving

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Nov 04, 2009 – RALEIGH, N.C. – Christ Episcopal Church has announced that the third annual “Run for Young” event will be held on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at 10 a.m.  The 5K will begin at Christ Episcopal Church, located at 120 E. Edenton St.  This race was created after 18-year-old parish member Sadiki Young died in a drunk driving accident in which he was a passenger in January 2007.  “Run for Young” is designed to raise community awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving.  All proceeds from the race will go toward the Christ Church Youth Endowment Fund, established in Sadiki’s memory, and the Wakefield High School Just Think First Program.  Online registration is now available at www.sportoften.com.

QUOTES:
“It is important that we take time each year to celebrate the life and honor the memory of our friend, Sadiki Young,” said Raleigh City Councilor Philip Isley, one of Sadiki’s Sunday school teachers.  “We want to use this race as a means of educating the youth in our community to the dangers of drinking and driving so that we never have to see another life cut short in this way.”

DETAILS:

- Those registered by Jan. 3 will receive a T-shirt.

- “Run For Young” is one of eight races that make up the Empire Grand Prix Race Series.

- According to a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) report, an estimated 11,773 people died as the result of drinking and driving in 2008.

- The Apex (N.C.) Police Department states that the leading cause of death for teenagers is automobile accidents, and 80 percent of those accidents are alcohol related.

- According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there was an average of one death every 45 minutes in alcohol-related car accidents.
