Cary Family Dental’s Dr. Allan Acton Gets Sheared for Charity

Cary dentist makes good on promise to shave head after practice raises $20,000 during annual fund drive

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Nov 03, 2009 – CARY, NC – For the fourth consecutive year, Dr. Allan Acton and Cary Family Dental participated in the Crown Council’s Smiles for Life campaign, a four-month charity drive to help children facing serious health and educational problems in communities throughout North America. This year, the practice set out to raise $20,000 during the campaign and was further inspired by a promise made by Dr. Acton to shave his head should their goal be met.  By extending their fundraising efforts by an additional month, the practice made their goal, and Dr. Acton was clipped by practice team members on October 20th.

Cary Family Dental Practice Administrator, Beth Hertrick, has been with the practice for six years and says that although she was very surprised Dr. Acton actually took the team members up on their $20,000 fundraising challenge, she knew that he would follow through with the head shaving if their goal was met.

“Dr. Acton is very committed to our Smiles for Life campaign and will do anything to raise money for charity,” says Hertrick.  “He is a very giving person and is dedicated to making a difference in the community through his work with Smiles for Life, our recent Cary Smile Makeover, and the many local charities that benefit from his support.”

Through a unique partnership with legendary entertainer Garth Brooks and his Teammates For Kids Foundation, Smiles For Life guarantees that a full 50 percent of the money raised by Crown Council members goes to children’s charities in communities across North America.  Cary Family Dental selected local charity Interact to receive the remaining 50 percent.  Interact was formed in the 1980’s by the merger of three Wake County agencies: Rape Crisis Center, Women’s Aid, and Child Abuse Prevention Services. The resulting agency was known as The Family Violence and Prevention Center, Inc. and became known as Interact in 1984.

Dr. Acton admits to being nervous during his head shaving experience, but says it was worth it considering the tremendous impact the money raised with have on so many deserving children and families in need.

“Hair grows back, but the positive difference we were able to make in so many lives will last a lifetime,” says Dr. Acton.  When asked if he would accept a similar challenge next year, Dr. Acton says that if he does do it again, he’ll definitely make sure that he’s shaved during warmer weather.  A video of Dr. Acton’s charity shave has been posted to YouTube and can be viewed by visiting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgxmPTVCIGo.

The Crown Council’s Smiles for Life Foundation has raised more than $22 million since 1998, benefiting nearly 500 children’s charities across North America. Since joining the campaign, Dr. Acton and Cary Family Dental have raised over $60,000.  For more information on Smiles for Life, visit www.smilesforlife.org.
