EtherCAT® is an Ethernet-based fieldbus protocol optimized for high-speed, real-time industrial control based on a Master/Slave configuration. For instance, process data exchange with 1000 distributed digital I/O requires approximately thirty micro-seconds. Data for 100 servo axes can be updated with a frequency of up to 10 kHz. The EtherCAT® Master device requires only a standard Ethernet MAC, even without dedicated communication co-processor.

This new product will offer an opportunity for a smooth transition from established network applications into Ethernet.
Designed with respect to high performance, small resource usage and scalability, the EtherCAT® Master software has core components that are operating system (OS) and CPU architecture independent and makes a port to customer-specific application targets very easy.
