Circle Time has been highlighted as a core methodology for delivering the SEAL curriculum, but it can also be used in PSHE sessions, curriculum lessons and with tutor groups. In this DVD Jenny Mosley offers professional and practical advice on how to run a circle time session. Following a brief introduction she outlines the five skills that are essential to successful circle time:
• Thinking
• Looking
• Listening
• Speaking
• Concentrating.
The later films of two circle time sessions show how to build up these skills in the participants.
Crucial to an effective circle time are five steps, which can be seen in action in the two separate year group demonstrations:
• Meeting Up
• Warming Up
• Opening Up
• Cheering Up
• Calming Down.
Embedded throughout all of this are five ground rules:
• Be positive
• Plan and prepare
• No put downs/naming
• Manage your time
• Evaluate the session.
Finally, Jenny stresses how important it is to ‘look after yourself’ – cognitively, emotionally, creatively, physically and spiritually.
Most of the DVD is devoted to two circle time sessions – one with a Year 7 group, the other Year 11s – filmed in a school location and led by Jenny in which all of the above is put into practice. Each group is followed by a teacher question and answer session where Jenny offers invaluable guidance borne from her years of experience as a master circle time practitioner and trainer.
The DVD is also available in intranet format. The Site License allows teachers throughout the school to have access to the training material in order to be able to watch it in their own time.
