The Community Parent Center and The Allstate Foundation will bring the highly acclaimed “Driving in the Safe Lane” program to two Nassau County high schools.
The program will be brought to the Plainedge Union Free School District on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The 90-minute lecture program will be held at Plainedge High School, located at Wyngate and Peony Drive in North Massapequa.
On Wednesday, November 18, 2009, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District announced that the program will begin at 7:00 p.m. It will be held at the Board Room of the Brookside School, located at 1260 Meadowbrook Road in North Merrick.
Both events are open to the public.
The program brings together police, a pediatrician, an insurance representative, and the mother of a teen driver who was tragically killed when driving with friends. The program educates parents, new and prospective teen drivers about safety measures, New York State driving laws, and parental liabilities. Since the program’s inception, it has grown in popularity for its comprehensive approach and impact on those who attend.
Annually, Nassau County ranks among the highest in the number of fatal crashes for 16-19 year olds. Between 2002 and 2006, 42 teens were killed on Nassau roadways. Driving in the Safe Lane was launched in 2007 by the Community Parent Center in response to the growing problem of unsafe teen driving.
“Our goal is to save young lives through education and awareness. Our message is that driving is a privilege and comes with great responsibility,”
