After years of an abusive childhood, Donna Solitario found inner peace by forgiving those who harmed her. Her inspirational story is relayed through her poems and provides guidance for facing adversity in her new book “Coming Home to My Heart; for Inner Peace” (ISBN 9781432734923, Outskirts Press, 2009).
As a young child facing abuse, Donna Solitario was filled with shame and anger. She tried to fill the void in her heart and soul with substances and relationships that only mimicked the unhealthy abuse she knew as a child. She credits God’s grace with healing her pain and allowing her to forgive her parents and herself for her mistakes.
Knowing her story could help others, Donna planned to write her autobiography, but then an unexpected insight came to her while teaching. “One day I passed a poem out to one of my at risk students who was feeling down. The next day I came to class, he showed me that he had made a beautiful card out of it. I was so surprised and happy to see it cheered him up. The next day I had several students at my classroom door asking me to write them poems.” Donna not only went on to write poetry for her students, but she motivated many of them to write their own poetry. Then inspired by the realization that her poetry could change lives, she set about writing her own autobiographical poems.
Whether writing about loneliness, the child who waits for love, or the power of pursuing one’s destiny, Donna never forgets how her powerful words have the potential to change lives. As a teacher, she feels that with God taken out of the classroom, poetry fills a spiritual void for children. Donna has been fortunate to have poetry bring her in touch with her higher, better self, and through her poems and by teaching, she helps the next generation move toward a better understanding of themselves and their value to the world.
