Altus-The Charter School of San Diego Founder, President, & CEO Mary Searcy Bixby received the 2009 "Women Who Mean Business" Award from the San Diego Business Journal. Alongside other prestigious recipients, Bixby was chosen from 167 nominees for this honor recognizing local women for their outstanding contributions to business, the government, and the San Diego community. This is the San Diego Business Journal's 16th year presenting these awards. The award was given at a banquet presentation October 27th where former eBay President & CEO and California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman gave the keynote address.
Bixby was recognized specifically for her commitment and passion for educational reform and the design and implementation of educational programs for disengaged students and students at risk. Her expertise centers on both public and private education, the charter initiative, and the formation of coalitions through the networking of community based organizations, businesses, and public and private agencies. Bixby was a pioneer in developing systems for systemically holding individuals accountable for their work. She specializes in improving organizations through the use of data to drive decision-making, a process that brought The Charter School of San Diego recognition as a California Award for Performance Excellence winner in 2005 and 2007.
