The question of how to build an email list until it becomes a profitable asset is one no serious online marketer can ignore. As many web entrepeneurs have discovered over the last few years, no generic search listings can ever be relied upon as the basis for a long term, profitable business.
So how to go about it?
1. Set up a squeeze page. This is a web page with only one thing in mind: getting that subscription!
The squeeze page should therefore offer some kind of incentive, like a free report, or a series of articles, or any information the visitor would eagerly anticipate, in exchange for joining your list.
You should continue to tweak this page, to make it as effective as possible in converting the visitors you send there. (More about squeeze pages at http://www.webadjust.com/
2. Prepare a subscription form that will appear on every page of your site. I usually have a small form near the top of the sidebar of my web pages, where it can't be missed.
I also make use of a more elaborate subscription form that pops up once per day for every unique visitor. Pop-up - or "hover-pop" - forms are very effective in drawing attention to your form and the benefits you offer for subscribing.
3. Now that you have all bases covered on your site, you are ready to start marketing of your squeeze page. There is no shortage of methods to do this, but my approach is to try a number of the cheapest methods, and then to stick to those that work for a while.
Many web marketers will go straight to Pay-Per-Click (PPC) marketing, as this will normally result in a lot of traffic, and you can measure the subscription rate quite effectively. The drawback is that it can be quite expensive to build a useful list of say 5000 members, and it can take a while to break even (by marketing to the list). On the other hand, such a list can be a long term asset and you can get your money back many times over!
An enduring - and cheap - method is to submit articles on related topics to article directories, and use the resource box to send readers to your squeeze page. Even if they end up on another page of your site, your sidebar and pop-up forms will provide you with a number of opportunities to convert them to your list.
