“Ghds,” says a friend with better hair and more expertise in such matters, “give you the hair of an Atomic Kitten in one easy stroke. Everyone who buys other brands ends up forking out for the real thing.” This would be music to the ears of Martin Penny, group managing director of the business. It’s seven years since a hairdresser friend of his showed him some straightening irons he’d been sent by a South Korean inventor and suggested he buy the rights.
The ghd offices are an unlikely hub for such a glamorous end result. A collection of low-ceilinged rooms built around a warehouse, they’re hushed and full of young, smiley people with pictures of Christmas parties on their desks and tropical beaches as their screensavers, with two balding men testing new products in a poky room. The only clue that there might be some money here is in the car park, full of Mercedes, Range Rovers and BMWs.
