Japan Interventional Cardiology Devices Market: Coronary Stents to Drive Growth

The Japanese interventional cardiology devices market is forecast to grow by 6% annually during 2008-2015 to reach $1.4 billion by 2015.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Oct 30, 2009 – The Japanese interventional cardiology devices market is forecast to grow by 6% annually during 2008-2015 to reach $1.4 billion by 2015. The market is expected to be driven by increasing incidence of coronary diseases, increasing preference for minimally invasive procedures, and product innovation enabling physicians to perform Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) for complex cases.

The coronary stents market accounted for 74% of the total interventional cardiology devices market in Japan in 2008. It grew at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 16% during 2001-2008, and was valued at $718m in 2008. The introduction of Drug Eluting Stents (DES) in 2004 by Cordis fuelled growth in the market. In 2008, the DES market accounted for more than 80% of the total coronary stents market. This phenomenal growth was supported by strong clinical evidence showing reduced restenosis rates with DES compared to Bare Metal Stents (BMS).

Heart disease has emerged as the second major cause of death in Japan in the last few decades, and Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) accounts for approximately half of the heart disease-related deaths in the country. The rise in incidence rate has been largely attributed to socioeconomic development and a growing westernization of lifestyles, including greater availability of high-calorie and high-fat foods, as well as widespread sedentary work patterns coupled with high mental stress. This is one of the factors which has led to a surge in demand for percutaneous procedures. Since the general prognosis of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) patients in Japan is much better as compared to that in the west, physicians routinely go for PCI as against surgery.

The Japanese market for interventional cardiology devices is dominated by US players. Terumo Corporation, Boston Scientific, Cordis, Medtronic and Abbott Laboratories remain the leading competitors in the Japanese interventional cardiology market. Together, these companies accounted for 90% of the market share in 2008. Local player Terumo is the market leader with 29% market share. Boston Scientific and Cordis dominate the coronary stents market with a combined market share of 42%.
