The opportunity to watch a professional painter construct a painting from start to finish is a unique and enjoyable learning experience for the would-be artist and non-artist alike. It is slow magic. The process differs from painter to painter, but the wonder of color and brush stroke is the same. So much of what we commonly know about painting comes from Sunday afternoon TV and mediocre paintings painted with a 4" brush, missing out on the elegance of training and soul of the artist
Gavin Brooks is an award-winning painter from Maryland who brings her Tidewater experience of glowing skies and water, south to the Low Country of coastal Carolina. Xiangyuan Jie, taught by Russian painting professors in China, is best known for his work in animated films, Mulan, Ice Age 2, Lilo and Stitch. His career as a fine artist has now stepped to the foreground. Jie has a fine sense of composition and is a skilled draftsman, but his heart makes the painting! John Poon is originally from San Francisco and now lives in Utah with his family. A gifted painter and teacher, John has been nationally awarded for his landscapes, and he teaches sold-out workshops nationwide as well as online classes for BYU and San Francisco's Academy of Art College. Steve Songer also comes to the Atlantic coast from Utah. Steve taught high school for many years before making the move to full-time painting. His success suggests he could well have made the change earlier! Perry Austin is from Alabama and he paints what he calls "the disappearing South". Although he has painted all over the US and in Ireland and Russia, Perry has a passion for recording what is left of the farms, farmland, and environment that are so integral to the history of the South. Larry Moore grew up in Coco Beach Florida painting surf boards as a kid. Larry's awards in the illustration field are numerous. More than 40 of his illustrations have been used by the Orlando Opera Company. Larry's fine art work has now deservedly taken center stage. Richard Oversmith studied in Michigan and London, but he's actually a native North Carolinian. His home is in the Great Smokey Mountains, but he'll come to the coast to paint.
Paint Wilmington! contributes financially to the community of Wilmington every year, and this year the paintings produced by John Poon and Perry Austin will be auctioned, with all proceeds going to the respective institution. In past years, donations have been made to a soup kitchen and homeless shelter, public radio, and an art training program for underprivileged kids, among others.
Why bring such painters to Wilmington? To have paintings of the landscapes, waters, and streets that we call home. What, after all, is a painting, if not convenient transportation to a good memory?
