Mervyn King, the Governor of the Bank of England told MPs recently that there are signs that the UK economy has returned to growth in the current quarter. In a Treasury Select Committee hearing, the Governor said there were indications of a pick-up in activity, both in the UK and overseas.
Recent research from Lloyds TSB Scotland also showed that the recession should be over by the end of the year. The quarterly poll of more than four hundred companies, which has been conducted by the bank for almost twelve years, chimes with recent upbeat surveys from the likes of the CBI, the Scottish Chambers of Commerce and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.
