San Francisco - Oceana, the largest international conservation group focused solely on the oceans, honored Willie Brown for his ocean restoration work on California’s Great Highway, at a benefit dinner held Friday at the St. Francis Yacht Club.
“Willie Brown has had a distinguished career fighting for progress in California,”
Oceana, based in Washington, DC, has Pacific coast offices in Newport Beach and Monterey, California, Portland Oregon and Juneau and Anchorage Alaska. Oceana employs a campaign model to win victories for the ocean. Over the past year Oceana has won victories for the Pacific including the ban of the krill fishing industry and the closing of the arctic to commercial fishing.
“The ocean receives less than 1/10th of 1 per cent of the "eco" dollar despite covering 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, Lea Haratani, a lifetime resident of the California Coast and Vice-president of Oceana’s Ocean Council. “The oceans are at a critical tipping point right now and we need to start regarding blue as the new green.”
A fashion show of recycled plastic couture was by presented by Haute Trash, to promote the reuse of plastic materials. Hostess’ Joan Haratani (Partner Morgan, Lewis and Bockius) and Lea Haratani also modeled original Haute Trash fashions.
The event, co chaired by Joan Haratani and Lea Haratani, brought a number of notable San Franciscans out in support of work on the Pacific Coast.
