Beware of Overconfidence!
"Any time you think you have the game conquered, the game will turn around and punch you right in the nose" Mike Schmidt (Phillies 1972-1989)
Our Phillies put the pennant in the bag and now they're ready to take on the New York Yankees in the World Series. As Phillies fans we want them to win. We want them to believe they can win. But could too much confidence lead to a Yankee assault on our home town boys? You bet.
Athletes rarely compete without believing they will triumph over their opponent. Somebody has to be wrong. The end result of overconfidence will turn the tide in any game. The same "game killer" can also be found in the business world where the end result can have the same negative impact. A loss is still a loss. A few of the game changing circumstances associated with overconfidence are:
* Underestimation of opposition
* Arrogance or conceit
* Self-importance
* Poor judgment
* Errors and mistakes
* Miscalculations
* Missed opportunities
* Lack of concentration or focus
* Lack of concern or indifference
I've seen overconfidence happen many times over in both the sports arena as well as the business arena. I've helped thousands of athletes and business executives and their teams learn to commit their full attention to their game and the task at hand. I've shown them how to "get in the zone" and stay there. I've given them the tools they need to obtain the mental edge they need to compete and win regardless what the game may be.
Overconfidence can be overcome. Overconfidence can be turned into a winning attitude.
I wish our Phillies the best of luck and hope for a great 2009 World Series WIN!
