The Wonder of it All
Anna Scholz has dubbed her Autumn-Winter 09 collection "Wonderland"
Retro for Today
Past and future mingle in Anna’s designs which often combine retro details in fresh new silhouettes In her latest collection, old skool 80s video games are slyly referenced in the pattern of the Pac-Man 50s jacket. Her 70s style maxi wrap dress, 60s era crepe flare trousers and 40s-inspired crepe origami wrap dress all further evoke magical “Wonderland”
Though she loves to play with vintage elements, Anna always maintains a look which is sleek and modern. She often employs unusual colour palettes or embellishments to update a retro-flavoured style or print. For example, the bright yellow of the lily print and the fanciful lollipop colours of the rainbow striped flower print translate as urbane and edgy against a black silk ground.
The paisley print on silk radiates playfulness and sophistication through a fresh, modern colour palette of brights mixed with of-the-moment neutral tones. Likewise, the nude and plum palette of the zebra stripes on silk georgette is an on-trend and unexpected departure from the usual animal prints.
Anna’s Pac-Man print coat puts a grown-up spin on the current rage for computer graphic patterns while also referencing silhouettes from the 50s and 60s. Likewise, flirty frills give Anna’s latest trench coats an updated look that’s part Casablanca, part Carrie Bradshaw.
Curve-Conscious Crepes
Stand-out crepe jersey pieces certainly reflect the Autumn-Winter 09 collection’s flirtation with past eras. Anna likes to work with crepe jersey for its drape, its expensive weight and its versatility. It’s also a perfect medium for Anna’s special design “tricks” which flatter the plus size figure.
The new funky flare trousers feature legs which are slightly narrower to the knee – elongating to the plus size figure -- and then flare out to the ankle. With their liquid movement, these trousers have a sleek Club 54 look that is still very current.

Similarly, it’s easy to imagine a young flapper from the 20s wearing Anna’s new crepe jersey sequin panel top. An elongating hip-length body with a graceful sash lends this top a certain gamine Gatsby quality. The focal point is the panel across the chest of semi-matte gunmetal sequins in a “shattered glass” pattern. The effect is both ethereal and structured. Paired with Anna’s basic tailoring trousers, it’s a vision of vintage Hollywood glamour.
So step through the looking glass and enter a Wonderland of plus size fashions with Anna Scholz’s Autumn-Winter ’09 collection. In addition, new pieces and styles exclusive to the web shop are added to the site regularly.
