In the latest edition of the annually published report from Target Market News, a 15-year-old research and information company specializing in black consumer marketing and media, purchases made by black women are the single biggest influence on the growth of African-American spending. With more income to spend, black women have increased expenditures over last year in categories in which they are the dominant buyers. These include child care (+8%), personal care products (+18%), gifts (+155%), food (+3%), women’s apparel (+2%), women’s footwear (+13%). And yet, women of color, particularly African-American women are saying to advertisers, “You don’t know us very well.”
On Friday, November 20 at the Sale Hall Chapel at Morehouse College, the first Multicultural Marketing Townhall will touch on these subjects and more, engaging audience builders and seekers in a never before forum to bridge the gap in understanding how to best fit the needs of this influential market segment – that makes sense! Early bird registration is $55 through October 30th. Click here to purchase tickets.
Nichelle Stephens a blogger, editor and social media strategist is the editor of PepsiWeInspire.com, a branded lifestyle blog for African American women will join as one of many panelists ready to engage both sides on the importance of creating targeted messages that talks “to” – not “at” women and engage them where it matters. Stephens says, "It is essential to have a multicultural forum because any marketing campaign is more effective when the message resonates with the perspective of your audience."
Marketers admit to a lack of confidence when developing the who, what, why, when and how when it comes to developing their multicultural strategies. They often cast a wide net in reaching diverse markets when casting a targeted net would be more effective. In a parallel industry, new and evolving media experts and companies focused on the multicultural market are building measurable and meaningful audiences being lost by dominant media outlets everyday. Corvida Raven of SheGeeks, the self-proclaimed “Oprah of the web” is an example of how media experts are using the opportunity of new media methodologies to tap into a segment that has fallen out of love with the status quo. "Now more than ever people of varying cultures are having the power of their voice felt around the globe using one of the most powerful tools of today: social media! They're connecting with like-minded individuals, talking about your company, and influencing your brand's power more than you ever could.” She continues, “You need to know how to navigate it without discrimination, nor fear."
As the multicultural audience continues to grow, it’s essential that marketers learn to connect to specific audiences in order to grow and tailor brand messaging to a largely misunderstood and overlooked market.
