The Children’s Glaucoma Foundation Visionary Gala

Saturday, November 7th at The Colonnade Hotel, Boston

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Oct 27, 2009 -
Boston, Mass: The Children’s Glaucoma Foundation will be hosting its first annual Visionary Gala fundraiser at The Colonnade Hotel in Boston on Saturday, November 7th from 6-10:30 pm.  This celebration is to support programs for children with glaucoma, featuring celebrity auctioneer and WCVB-TV news anchor, Susan Wornick.

The Children’s Glaucoma Foundation (CGF) was founded by the inspiration of the Barry Family in 1999, after the birth of their son who was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma.  Michelle Barry, Honorary Co-Chair states, “I never thought babies could be born with glaucoma, I always thought it was a disease that only affected adults. The goal of the foundation is to increase awareness and provide resources for research of childhood glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness in children.”

Jill Babcock, Co-Chair and board member of the CGF says, “The committee members have worked nonstop to plan this festive event.  We have a wonderful evening planned, including an impressive live and silent auction.  Proceeds from this event will allow the Children's Glaucoma Foundation to move closer to its goal of preventing vision loss in children through the support of ongoing research, increased awareness and education.”

The Visionary Gala will also celebrate the tenth year anniversary of the foundation. During this time, the foundation has implemented a highly successful awareness campaign that focuses on early diagnosis and intervention, and is inspired by the work of Dr. David Walton, who has cared for hundreds of children with glaucoma.  Numerous research grants have been awarded all over the world whose results have improved treatments and added greatly to the understanding of glaucoma, its root causes and mechanisms.  The ultimate goal of the foundation is to assist researchers as they develop new procedures to control and prevent vision loss of children afflicted with this devastating and life altering disease.

About The Children’s Glaucoma Foundation:

The Children's Glaucoma Foundation was formed by a group of physicians, parents of children with glaucoma and concerned citizens.  Childhood glaucoma is a rare disease occurring in 1 in 10,000 children.  Yet, this disease is a leading cause of blindness in infants and children.

Many parents are unaware children can have glaucoma.  Pediatricians and primary doctors infrequently see children with glaucoma.  Because of this, a child's glaucoma may go unrecognized before the child experiences vision loss.

The Children's Glaucoma Foundation was founded to support programs for children with glaucoma. We are trying to increase awareness of the symptoms and encourage parents and physicians to screen infants and children.  Early diagnosis and treatment is essential to prevent vision loss.
