Fire Prevention Month Brings Additional Safety to East Hartford Community

East Hartford Firefighters to Receive New High-Rise Firefighting Equipment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Oct 26, 2009 -
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – October is National Fire Prevention Month, and now East Hartford firefighters will be receiving new equipment that will enhance their ability to combat high-rise fires.

Smith Brothers Insurance, Inc., which has an office in East Hartford, is partnering with Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company to award the East Hartford Fire Department a $5,400 grant for the purchase of the tools.

Specifically, grants funds are earmarked for upgraded fire hose and nozzles that will provide an increase in water flow to reach the top of high-rise buildings during fires.  With several of these large buildings in the fire department’s coverage area, including some of which provide housing for senior citizens, this equipment is critical to the department’s rescue efforts.

“These tools aren’t luxury items—they’re essential pieces of equipment that will allow us to better protect the residents and businesses in East Harford,” said East Harford Fire Chief John Oates.

“The City of East Hartford is fortunate to have an excellent fire department, and we’re very pleased to receive this corporate funding that will allow our firefighters to continue doing their fine work of protecting this community,” said East Harford Mayor Melody Currey.

Chief Oates will be joined by Mayor Currey and East Hartford firefighters as executives from Smith Brothers and Fireman’s Fund present the grant package.

“We’re glad to be able to give back to the City of East Hartford in a tangible way,” said Kimberley Connolly, executive vice president for Smith Brothers.  “Firefighters risk their lives everyday, so it’s paramount they have the tools to do their job effectively and efficiently.”

The grant package is part of a nationwide philanthropic program funded by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company.  The program is designed to provide needed equipment, training and educational tools to local fire departments.  Since 2004, Fireman’s Fund has issued grants to over 1,500 different departments totaling more than $24 million.  Independent insurance agencies that sell Fireman’s Fund products, like Smith Brothers, are able to direct these grants to support fire departments.
