Nettie Weber, Founder and Owner of Perfect Match Nannies, Inc., which serves Madison and Milwaukee area families, has issued the following response regarding the soon to be released video game from Entertainment Arts where a "Bad Nanny" achievement is designed to reward players who slaughter a yet undetermined number of unbaptized infants:
"Perfect Match Nannies is in complete agreement with the International Nanny Association's statement released concerning Dante's Inferno X-Box game." The INA's following statement has generated mass buzz in the high tech world of gaming, including MTV and Yahoo site mentions.
"INA feels this video game component of Dante's Inferno was created out of poor taste and bad judgment. INA is opposed to video games that promote and encourage players to "kill" babies, even in fantasy play. It is our opinion that this type of play may promote violence towards children. The name of the trophy or achievement, "Bad Nanny," is offensive to our association in that we strive to promote and educate the public regarding the selfless work nannies do to support families by providing quality in-home child care."
Weber had this to add, "I am 100% against censorship and know the story of Dante's Inferno-The Divine Comedy- which is what the video game is based upon. With saying that, to make the term "baby killing" of any type, no matter what form the "babies" take shape in for a game, "cool" and "fun" to young people or adults? And to call the achievement of doing so "Bad Nanny?" Well, I just think that's a bad choice. We could sit here for a week and list off research that links violence in media to real time violence in our neighborhoods."
Weber, a Board Member of the International Nanny Association, also stated that she agrees with the INA that the only two options she will be satisfied with are the non-release of the game or a total overhaul of these two components of the game.
