River cruise sales have doubled in 2009, against 2008 figures, for White Star Cruises and general manager Scott Anderson predicts further growth next year as British travellers realise the value and breadth of product now available.
With brands including Oberoi, AMA Waterways, Sonesta Nile Cruises and Anatolian Sky all offering world-class accommodation onboard river cruise vessels, the team at the Hove-based cruise specialist travel agent is bracing themselves for a surge in sales next year.
Anderson commented: “River cruising is most definitely growing in popularity. Long gone are the days of three-star older boats plying the Danube, Rhine or Moselle, staffed by surly crew and serving questionable goulash for every meal! Early sales for river cruises in 2010 have surprised us and show no sign of slowing.
“Today’s modern ships offer five-star accommodation, wonderful amenities and high quality food. Many also include shore excursions and port tours adding to the great value, plus often wine is included for evening meals – all very civilised.”
Luxury river cruises range in duration from the traditional seven days to 21 days, for a grand voyage from the North Sea to the Black Sea encompassing 12 countries and a myriad of delightful villages, towns and cities.
Anderson said: “One of the great benefits of a luxury river cruise is that the river boats can dock in the heart of the destination – allowing you quick and easy access to the wonderful sight-seeing offered. You can also enjoy having scenery outside the balcony all the time, and the calm waters.”
For history buffs and culture lovers, European river cruises remain the number one choice, specifically the Rhine Gorge with its castles perched on hilltops and picturesque vineyards.
However the Nile and Egypt are gaining popularity and not just with older couples. Families and younger couples are taking advantage of the great exchange rate and also the opportunity to have a multi-centre holiday in Egypt.
Anderson explained: “A seven-night Nile cruise is the perfect way to see Egypt, cruising from Luxor to Aswan you to get to see all the historic sights and adding on a pre or post-cruise stay in Cairo or a trip to the Red Sea resorts for relaxation and world-class diving, means you get to see the best of what Egypt has to offer.
“However buyer beware! You do get what you pay for and nowhere more so than in Egypt - if you see a bargain river cruise for an amazing price be careful - the boat and hygiene standard onboard may not be up to the standards you are used to.”
