Today, Unpublished Guy (www.unpublishedguy.com)
“It occurred to me when I was watching a PBS program about the voyage,” says Unpublished Guy. “Just as the sailors died from Pott’s disease, my short stories had died from various diseases, most notably, postmodern metafictional incomprehensibility.”
Sir John Franklin’s ships became locked in a frozen sea that resulted from an unexpectedly cold Arctic winter. The few that survived developed lead poisoning and stopped behaving rationally. The handful that survived headed south on a long sledge to Canada, lugging lifeboats behind them. Lifeboats were later discovered that had carried inessential items including many books.
To cope with the realization of the frozen state of his writing career and that getting published would be as elusive as the Northwest passage, Unpublished Guy developed a Yin-Yang combination of coping techniques.
“Two things have helped me cope,” says Unpublished Guy. “A well developed denial system similar to those used by alcoholics and embracing my unpublished status. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays I am in denial, and on the remaining days of the week I celebrate being unpublished.”
