The United States experienced the emergence of an economic crisis in the last quarter of 2008 that was the worst since the Great Depression. It quickly became evident that the cause of this financial meltdown was a perfect storm of multiple factors including irresponsibility, greed and lax oversight. Wall Street executives built an empire on a foundation of risky subprime home loans that crumbled when home foreclosures skyrocketed. Class warfare and anger at irresponsible actions by Wall Street investment bankers roiled the public as billions of taxpayers’ dollars were committed to bail out the same people that brought down the economy.
Some hardworking citizens found themselves living in foreclosure riddled neighborhoods and tent cities that the author has labeled – TARP Towns - after the Troubled Assets Relief Program approved by Congress in October of 2008.
OBAMA GUILTY of BEING PRESIDENT WHILE BLACK- is an inspiration that came to the author after he witnessed the disrespect and venom expressed towards President Barack Obama. The opposition to President Obama while vicious on it face was only a strategy to keep the wealth extracted from the middle class in the hands of the wealthy by getting the very people Obama sought to help to oppose his policies.
This book examines how the shadows of oppressive Jim Crow laws played a role in the hate spewed towards the forty-fourth President of the United States.
Barack Obama received a mandate in the general election. A few months later, it was a curious sight to witness people gathered around town hall meeting sites bearing signs depicting the President as Hitler, a socialist or a tyrant. Some even carried guns and a pastor prayed that Obama would die. A Republican Congressman called President Obama a liar on national television during his health-care speech to a joint session of Congress. There was something much deeper at play with President Obama and it centered on his race.
Some of the votes that went against the victor in the general election were because of an inability of many to cast their vote for a black man. Exit polling showed a skew in the proportion of white voters who supported John McCain versus the percentage that voted for John Kerry in 2004. Obama’s loss of most southern states and many sparsely populated states in the middle of the country displayed a schism in voting patterns. That split expressed itself later through angry outbursts from individual citizens and members of the media.
