Toyota's Phoenix Training Center Achieves LEED CI 2.0

PR Log (Press Release) – Oct 23, 2009 – Phoenix, Arizona – Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc.’s (www.toyota.com) Technical Training Center received a total of 29 points and achieved LEED® CI 2.0 Silver Level Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (www.usgbc.org) in early September. The center is located in Phoenix, Arizona, near the city’s University District.  

In keeping with the Toyota tradition, "built in quality" was a primary focus for the Toyota Phoenix Training Center. From the initial planning stage, the project team (consisting of Toyota RE&F Project Development and Ware Malcomb’s architectural team) worked closely to understand the Technical Instructors’ needs while finding creative ways to minimize cost and reduce the environmental footprint of the facility. The project incorporates Toyota’s sustainability-focused design guidelines which include:

•   Use of low-emitting materials with high percentage of post-consumer recycled content
•    Extensive re-use of salvageable building components
•    Employment of water efficiency & air quality controls
•   Innovative lighting fixtures with automatic solar dimming controls
•   Site specific recycling plan & Green Cleaning program

A custom signage program was created for the project and features LEED® information with project specific characteristics, and an overview of Toyota's green process.

Ware Malcomb (www.waremalcomb.com) provided interior design and LEED® services for the 10,000 square foot technical training department for Toyota Certified Mechanics.  The building serves as a state-of-the-art instructional facility where regional Toyota technicians will receive hands-on diagnostic and electronics training. The project features 5,000 square feet technical
training service including (F2) bays. While, the remaining 5,000 square feet houses two classrooms, a lounge, an office, kitchenette, restroom facilities, a conference room and storage/IT areas.

The Weitz Company (www.weitz.com) of Phoenix, Arizona served as the General Contractor for the project.
