The National Transportation Safety Board recommends that commercial truck and bus drivers and merchant ship pilots should be screened for sleep apnea. The board made similar recommendations for airline pilots and train operators earlier this year.

Do you have a history of snoring and sleep apnea? Learn the symptoms at http://www.ihatecpap.com. Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, is a disorder in which the tissues at the back of the throat temporarily collapse during sleep, causing repeated stops and starts in breathing during the night. This leads to poor-quality sleep and, often, daytime drowsiness.
In letters to the Coast Guard and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the NTSB board recommended requiring medical examiners to question drivers and ship pilots about the disorder — which involves disruptions in breathing during sleep — and to develop programs to identify the problem.
