A GOD’S GENERAL WENT HOME TO BE WITH THE LORD
In August, 2009, Apostle Timothy Aremu Iyanda, a mightily anointed man of God who God used mightily in a great revival, went home to be with the Lord, at the age of 74.
Timothy Aremu Iyanda, was a great African Revivalist through whom God shook Africa, especially Nigeria, in the sixties and seventies. Through his prayer and faith, hundreds of thousands received salvation, healing, deliverance and various blessings.
Timothy Iyanda, the Founder and General Overseer of Go Ye Pentecostal Mission International, was born on June 1, 1935, at Orile-Owu, Nigeria.
Before his birth, his mother had given birth to ten children who died in infancy.
In desperation, his father went for help from one herbalist (witch doctor, occult priest) to another, in spite of the fact that the old Iyanda was one of the founders of the Baptist Church in Isanlu Isin. But the devil failed the old man. All his dabbling in occultism failed to bring the needed miracle.
But the Lord showed mercy to Timothy’s father and gave him the miracle he needed at the revival meetings conducted by D.O. Babajide at the Apostolic Church, Orile-Owu. Timothy Aremu Iyanda was the result of that miracle.
After some considerable education, Timothy Iyanda worked for some time with his father in his cocoa farm and blacksmith business. Then he went to Lagos, Nigeria, to begin to learn Motor Mechanics as an apprentice in 1954.
In 1957, he went to Ghana in search of the Golden Fleece. There, he got involved in diamond smuggling. But he never got caught. Three years after he got to Ghana, Timothy Iyanda had become a wealthy businessman.
Apostle Timothy Iyanda got born again in March, 1963. He came across a gospel tract (from overseas). He read the tract and saw the light. A great interest for the word of God and soul-winning arose in the heart of the re-born Timothy Iyanda. He became highly interested in the things of God, especially prayer, Bible-reading and soul-winning.
He received the baptism with the Holy Spirit at a prayer meeting. One night, while he was praying in the church, something very strange happened to him. At 3 a.m., he heard a voice like thunder-clap. His whole body trembled. The church building shook, just like the place where the disciples were assembled after they had prayed in Acts 4:24-31.
Another night, as he was praying, many angels appeared to him. Oil was poured on his head, anointing him for the ministry. That night he became conscious of the call of God on his life.
After these unusual experiences, he lost interest in his business. All he wanted to do was to go and show the love of God to all people. He became seized with the desire to go tell every human being how Jesus died to make salvation available free of charge to every man.
To demonstrate his trust in God and desire to obey God to the letter, Timothy Iyanda sold all his merchandise at a knock-down price and began to distribute the money he realized from the sales to beggars.
He went from one town to another, preaching the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
At Okeiho town, Nigeria, the Lord began to demonstrate His mighty miracle-working power in Timothy Iyanda’s Ministry. His evangelistic and revival meetings became characterized by astounding miracles of healing. The dumb spoke, the deaf heard, the blind had their sights restored in almost all his meetings.
By the end of the seventies, this man of God had gone with the gospel and power of Jesus Christ to all parts of Nigeria and to many countries, such as, Cameroon, Republic of Benin, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Lone, Togo, Kenya, USA, Netherlands (Amsterdam), Scotland, England and France.
During the early years of his ministry, Apostle T.A. lyanda exploited, to the glory of God, the power of electronic media, especially radio. Whenever Timothy Iyanda was preaching or praying on the Radio and TV, sick people would lay their hands on their radio and TV sets and would be healed of various diseases.
Those who witnessed the revival meetings of Timothy A. Iyanda in the sixties and seventies would never forget the awesome presence of God and the mighty manifestations of the power of the Holy Spirit at those meetings.
Timothy Iyanda was a tireless servant of the Lord Jesus Christ. Listening to him in the evening of May 29, 2008 in his house, I understood that this man was not through yet with the Lord’s battle… that the devil had no cause to laugh as far as this man was concerned …. that his heart was still set on the task nearest to the heart of the Lord – soul-winning … that his heart was still burning with love for God like the heart was in the sixties … that retirement from God’s work wasn’t on his priority list.
He kept fighting the Lord’s battle until his last days upon the earth. He would have loved to keep fighting His Lord’s battle for another ten years. But his Master had another plan for him: to bring His faithful servant home to begin to enjoy the joy of the Lord he loved and served so well.
Timothy Iyanda obviously did not receive the great accolades usually showered in U.S.A. on God-anointed ministers. His name was not included in the world’s Roll of Honor ‘for great Christians’. His portrait was not enshrined in Harold Henniger’s The Christian Hall of Fame in USA.
There is, however, no denying the fact that Apostle Timothy Iyanda deserved a place on the platform for God’s Generals of our time.
