MAUstudio Celebrates 4 Years of Kitsch, Pop Culture and Cute Characters with New Design and Discount

Oct. 22, 2009 - PRLog -- MAUstudio.com, the consigners of all things cute, kitschy and pop-culture, is toasting their fourth year anniversary, not with champagne and the customary gift of flowers, but with a vibrant new web design and 15% discount (enter BIRTHDAY at checkout).

Launched in 2005, MAUstudio started as a creative outlet for Manyi Au—a place where the then-publication designer could flex her anime-inspired muscle. With her signature characters MauMau the cat and Ball-Z the pug in tow, Manyi, initially offered her own handmade cards, jewelry, buttons, felt cell phone charms, and stationery. But in 2007, she reconceived MAUstudio as a showcase for other talented indie artists and designers who share the same passion. It was then that MAUstudio became an online consignment shop offering one-of-a-kind, limited quantity, jewelry, fashion, accessories and paper goods of the unexpected variety.

MAUstudio now boasts a roster of 23 independent artists, including: Sweet Meats, Zlanarama, The Clay Pony, Pepperina Press, Mark Poulin, Komodocat Designs, Loverly Ink, Jelly Designs, Brave Moonman, Bibliopegy and—the newest addition—Licia Beads. Inspired by everything from sushi and ham hocks to 60s era Doctor Who and the mixtapes and MTV culture of the 80s—and with such cute characters as Jellypus, The Snack Girls, Hedgehog, Mister Shifty and Orbit Girl—MAU’s designers create goods that pay homage to the street subcultures of New York and Japan as well as the things around them, that came before them, and that move them (be they animated, sparkly, fuzzy. . .or raw).

“The thing I love about our designers is their range. Where else can you buy a fleece t-bone steak plushy, a Cyberman or boombox necklace, and Coptic bound cassette journal with one click?” Manyi marvels of her one-stop-shopping for the imaginative. “I can’t wait to see who we bring into our fold in the next four years!”
