Celebrated for their leadership and diversity in business across all industries, Salute honors the top women executives who have been recognized for outstanding professional achievement, civic commitment, and leadership. The 2009 class will join a network of over 3,000 professionals and pioneers.

“The Salute Luncheon is one of the YWCA of the City of New York’s largest and most exciting events that I look forward to each year.  The idea of bringing together women from all walks of life in support of our mission is very powerful,” says Ms. Winters-Bishop.

The YWCA–NYC created the Academy of Women Leaders to honor trailblazing women in business, many of whom were the first to breakthrough corporate glass ceilings and become senior executives in their companies and industries.  The first groundbreaking YWCA-NYC Academy of Women Leaders Salute Luncheon took place in 1974, and has since become one of the most visible and important tributes to executive women in the nation.

At this year’s luncheon, two prominent figures from the media world will be honored with the Women of Influence Award: Lesley Jane Seymour, editor-in-chief of More magazine, and Dana Tyler, anchor of CBS 2’s News at 6 PM. Both women were selected because of their commitment to YWCA-NYC’s mission of empowering women and eliminating racism.

Named editor-in-chief of More magazine in 2008, Ms. Seymour is passionate about writing about the issues affecting women today. Prior to joining More, Ms. Seymour was editor-in-chief of Marie Claire, which under her direction received a National Magazine Award nomination for General Excellence in 2006.  Ms. Seymour, as editor-in-chief of Redbook, was responsible for repositioning the magazine and received a National Magazine Award nomination for Personal Service for the comprehensive Breast Cancer Medbook called “What to Do When You Find a Lump.”  She also served as editor-in-chief of YM, beauty director for Glamour, and contributing editor Vogue.  She is the author of two books, On the Edge: Images from 100 Years of Vogue and I Wish My Parents Understood.

Dana Tyler joined CBS 2 in 1990 as weekend co-anchor and reporter. Today, she co-anchors CBS 2 News at 6 PM with Don Dahler and contributes as host and reporter for “Eye on New York,” a half-hour weekly community affairs program. Throughout her 19 years at CBS 2, Ms. Tyler has received numerous awards and honors. In 2008, she received an honorary doctorate from St. John’s University, in 2007 was honored by McDonald’s in its annual salute to Black Broadcast Legends, and in 2006 received a New York Association of Black Journalists Award for her reporting on “The Color Purple.” Ms. Tyler won two Emmy Awards in 2003: One for Coverage of an Instant Breaking News Story for anchoring the “New York City Blackout” and the other for Outstanding Single Newscast, “CBS 2 News at 11: City Hall Shooting.”  Ms. Tyler with the late Reggie Harris became the first African-American anchor team in the New York market in 1990.

Thanks to its supporters, including the scores of corporations who support Salute and other programs, the YWCA-NYC continues to provide a variety of human service programs to women and their families throughout New York City.
