Don't Give in to Pressure Selling

Aggressive selling tactics by some mobility or healthcare dealers cause distress to elderly. Mangar International offers advice on countering these bullying salespeople.

Following on from a recent report of a mobility dealer using aggressive selling tactics, Mangar International offers some advice on the subject of buying a mobility or healthcare product such as a bath lift or riser recliner chair.

Undoubtedly having the right equipment to help with daily living can make all the difference enabling many people to stay in their own homes and remain independent. However equipment can be expensive so it is important to make the right decision.

A company who is a member of the British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) should abide by its strict code of conduct which covers all aspects of operation, but focuses in particular on sales methods to ensure vulnerable consumers are protected".

Reputable companies never adopt aggressive door to door, or cold call selling and should have a policy of full price transparency both in leaflets and adverts. "Always ask for a price over the telephone", Andrew continued. "Most companies within this industry will offer free no obligation home demonstrations to make sure the equipment is right for you. This is an important part of the buying process as you want to be fully sure the equipment you are buying is what you need. You might also like to have a friend or relative present. Never feel pressured to sign an order on the spot. Ask the representative to leave you with a quote and you can contact their Head Office when they have left."

For those who feel uncomfortable about having a salesperson come to their home, it is possible to try out equipment at an Independent Living Centre. These usually have a range of products and an occupational therapists on hand to provide impartial advice.
