Oct. 21, 2009 - PRLog -- Local chilli experts, Shawn and Joanna Plumb have been voted as regional finalists in the Local Food Heroes competition staged by Good Food cookery show Market Kitchen.  Edible Ornamentals in Chawston have been selected by a panel of expert judges as one of the top three food providers in the Anglian region and will be featured in the next series of the show, due to be broadcast in November.

The criteria for Local Food Heroes are businesses that provide the very best in food quality and service, have commitment and passion together with a strong connection to the local area. Food lovers across the nation were asked to nominate their favourite business which help put food onto our plates, that meet these criteria whether they be growers, farm shops or restaurants.  Viewer’s voted on the Good Food website, and the most popular 10 businesses in each region were assessed by a panel of experts, with the best three selected to appear in the TV series. Joanna and Shawn have been chosen as one of the top three in this region and are now looking forward to appearing on the show in November where one winner per region will be announced, the overall winner will then be revealed in December.

“I am delighted that so many people voted for us in this competition” commented Joanna. “We grow more chillies in Bedfordshire than the rest of the UK, and I hope that appearing on the show will encourage more people to use fresh chillies in their cooking. If we do become the next national Local Food Hero and win the £5000 prize, then it will be a real bonus.”

Since Shawn and Joanna began growing chillies, they have become renowned for their fresh chillies, chilli plants and their own range of gourmet chilli sauces, which can be purchased at Cherwood Nursery and local farmers markets.  They also supply their local Waitrose store and Morrisons Eastern region stores as well as leading London restaurants. Their Good Food appearance is the latest in a series of TV appearances including ‘Ready Steady Cook’ and ‘Economy Gastronomy’. Joanna is also a regular guest on BBC 3 Counties radio.
