It’s kind of scary to think about it, but it’s that time of year. The holidays are upon us. Most parents have just gotten over the hump of back to school, and now it’s time to start thinking about Thanksgiving dinner plans, and Christmas photos. With all the hustle and bustle of planning, many families forget to simply relax and have a good time.

Instead of thinking of family holiday photos as a chore, this year why not make family photo time a fun event?

Busy moms are taking advantage of what’s called a portrait playdate or portrait party. A protrait playdate is simply a small gathering of parents and kids, with a professional photographer present. The photographer will set up an area in your home or outdoors, where shots can be taken throughout the day while the children play together and the parents socialize. It’s a typical playdate with the added benefit of walking away with prfessional quality holiday photos. Just one more item to check off of your list of “to do’s”.

In addition to the social benefits, in many cases the party host can work out an arrangement with a photographer, to receive incentives for hosting the event.

West Toluca Lake, CA based professional photographer June Czerwinski, specializes in family portrature. As an example of how it all works, here is what Czerwinski requires of her hosts...

Parents tell their friends and family about the party. Mini photo sessions are booked in 20 minute intervals (and paid in full) online prior to the party. Up to 5 family members can be present for each session booked. After the photos are taken at the party, the session fee becomes a credit toward the purchase of prints. So the photo session is actually free. The host only needs to ensure that at least 8 sessions are booked  in advance of the party and they will receive 25% of all the paid bookings.
