Lehigh Regional Medical Center to become a smoke-free campus in November, 2009

PRLog (Press Release) – Oct 19, 2009 – In order to provide a healthier environment to employees, visitors and patients, Lehigh Regional Medical Center will become a tobacco-free campus on November 19th, 2009.  The process has been taking place in phases, each one eliminating a smoking area within the hospital premises.  

This initiative, which coincides with the American Cancer Society’s 34th “Great American Smoke-Out”, was planned as an opportunity to encourage people to commit to making long-term plans to quit for good.  “We are joining other hospitals in the State of Florida in their efforts to create a smoke and tobacco-free environment”, said Jose F. Morillo, Chief Executive Officer.  “With so many health risks associated with tobacco use, we felt we should set the example of a healthy work environment, especially in our role as caregivers in our community.  Our ultimate goal is to create a healthier environment at our facility for patients, visitors, employees, and physicians.”

For staff members who are currently smokers and would like to make the healthy choice of quitting, Lehigh Regional Medical Center has been encouraging along the way by paying for both the patch and nicotine gum, as well as providing smoking cessation education and support.
