Wilmington, DE -- Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, a tragedy that occurred in 1871. Survivors of the fire never forgot what they had been through. The fire changed the way that firefighters and pubic officials thought about fire safety. On the 40th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals Association of North America decided that the date of the fire would be observed by promoting public awareness on fire prevention.

Over 15,000 clothes dryer fires are reported each year; most of them were caused by failure to clean dryer vents. The National Fire Prevention Administration encourages everyone who owns a clothes dryer to have a complete dryer vent exhaust inspection done right away; and then, be sure to follow up with annual professional dryer vent cleaning. “Dryer vent cleaning is the number one way to prevent dryer fires,” said Gustafsson.
