Now, the missing piece in developing the sustainability lifestyle has come full circle. Through including interpersonal and familial relationships in the sustainability quotient, the concept of sustainable living can be complete.

(Phoenix, Arizona) — Calleen A. Morris, a graduate student at Arizona State University and Dr. Karissa Greving Mehall PhD, LMFT  have combined their passion and expertise regarding relationships and families to outline the process individuals and families can expect to experience as they look to solutions for relationship sustainability.

Until now, relationships have been largely ignored in the quest for more sustainable living practices. Now, the missing piece in developing the sustainability lifestyle has come full circle.  Through including interpersonal and familial relationships in the sustainability quotient, the concept of sustainable living can be complete.

Through sustainable relationship principles and practices families can better prepare for challenge and change, and through this preparation become fortified for times of uncertainty.  Morris claims, “Family members do not have to lose what they cherish in each other because of tough times, there is a process for sustaining and holding on to what works, and to reduce the devastating effects of life’s challenges.”

Mehall, founder of the Arizona Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic, states, “The current industry concept for sustainability is to operate in a way that minimizes the negative impact on people and their surroundings, while remaining financially successful. In expanding this concept, families will be able to use sustainable relationship principles to help guide their process of creating and maintaining successful relationships.”

Described within the model are three guiding principles of relationship sustainability within the social, economic and environmental realms.  Also described, is The Family Footprint representing the impact of current relationship and the legacy left to future generations.

Graham L. Twaddell, Environmental & Sustainability Manager for an Environmental Consultancy Firm, adds “Identifying relationship and family sustainability indicators will provide a blueprint for successful and sustainable living.”
