Oct. 19, 2009 - PRLog -- Conor McCarthy Managing Partner Jennings O'Donovan & WindPM spoke at the event.

Over the past four years there has been an explosive growth in the Environment Goods and Services sector. This growth being driven by EU Directives, national legislation and a public who are increasing environmentally conscious.

The Environmental Goods and Services sector is now worth over €5 billion per annum in Ireland and is one of the few industries that have recorded growth over the past 18 months.
This unique seminar brought together policy makers in Local Authorities, State Bodies, Elected Representatives and the businesses that operate in the sector.

Conor McCarthy explained the focus of his speech as “My focus here today is to develop the theme of green procurement in the context of the environmental goods and services sector and to identify specific areas where funding can be unlocked at national and local authority level.

Conor identified the opportunities available to small and medium enterprises “The stated target for the development of renewable energy sources is to have at least 40% renewable electricity in our system by the year 2020. The driving force to achieve this target will primarily come from the on shore wind energy or wind farm sector. This 40% target figure equates to approximately 5,800MW of installed renewable energy capacity. To put this into context, this is equivalent when completed to a projected investment of the order of €8.7 to €9.8 billion over the period to 2020.

Conor explained " A significant proportion of this cost will relate to wind turbine generator procurement which is almost exclusively the domain of well established international suppliers located outside of Ireland. Nonetheless, opportunities exist for consulting engineering and management services throughout a range of activities from feasibility to planning and environmental impact assessments; pre-construction design and planning compliance; and administration of construction phase activities. There will also be opportunities for civil works contracting firms for the construction of the large wind turbine generator foundations and the access roadways to the wind farm sites”
