Oct. 19, 2009 - PRLog -- Golf is truly an individual sport. Looking at the basics, they are the same for everyone; however not two people will ever have the same golf swing due to the differences in body types. Every individual; in order to perform a proper golf swing, will have to adapt their bodies in their own way.

Developing your own method of playing golf will vastly improve your success and enjoyment of the game. The basic fundamentals need to be practiced until they are ingrained in your muscles and that will lead to greater confidence on the course.

An action that will help you immediately improve your golf swing is to look straight at the ball and keep your head still. Your head should be positioned straight in line with your spine, and your nose should be raised up a little so that when you start your swing, your left shoulder fits under your chin. A lot of players tuck their heads into their chests to try and keep their heads still while looking straight at the golf ball.

Unfortunately, while in this position it is almost impossible perform a proper golf swing. If you are finding it difficult to keep your head straight while keeping an eye on the ball, try the following trick.

The next time you play golf, when you approach the ball, assume the correct stance with your feet and knees in position while keeping your head and back straight. Now bend forward slightly at your waist and look straight at the ball. From this position, if you try and take a swing, your left shoulder will more than likely hit your chin.

Keep your eye on the ball and raise your head slowly until your left should does not hit your chin. Keep your eyes fixed on the ball to ensure that your head does not move from side to side.

Slowly follow through the back swing as well as the down swing portions of your golf swing. Do not actually hit the ball but do the follow through so that you get used to the action.

This is an easy exercise that you can do in your own time in your backyard. Repeat it about 25 times in a row, then take a break for a few minutes, then repeat it again for the same number of times.

If needed, you should make minor corrections to your head and body positions to enable you to keep your eyes straight on the ball and to prevent your left shoulder from hitting your chin.

Doing this regularly will build up “muscle memory” so that you will be able to perform the movement correctly. You will be training your body to keep your head straight and to position itself correctly so that you will be able to successfully execute a proper golf swing.

Another one of the basics in golf that will help you vastly improve your golf swing is to relax your stance and your grip on the golf club. That may sound easier said than done especially when you are surrounded by fellow workers or friends.

However, to execute a great golf swing it is important to relax the muscles so that you will have the proper balance in your stance. No matter what golf clubs you use, if your balance is off key, you are going to play bad golf and the only way to good balance is to practice and practice some more.

So it is really important that you spend some time by yourself practicing the techniques described here so that you can build some muscle memory as well as self confidence.

Here’s a good tip – assume the address position with your club, then relax your body and hold that position for about 30 seconds. During this time, assess how this stance feels.

Does one part of your body feel more tense than another? Does it feel like you have more weight on one foot than the other? Where is your body getting tired?

Determining all of these discomforts as you keep your stance will help you work out where you need to relax more. Maintaining a good balance and keeping your head straight, are just two basic parts of a great golf swing.

The more you practice the two exercises given above, the more your golf swing will improve. Training your body and your muscles properly to perform specific movements takes time and practice. Just like a ballet dance has to practice certain stances again and again until the stance can be done to perfection, so you need to train your own body the same way for the perfect golf swing.

The amount of time and effort spent on improving your golf swing will certainly pay off on the golf course. In time your stance will become like second nature and you will be able to slip into the proper address position and perform and effortless, satisfying and powerful golf swing.
