By: In the Orchard Programming for the Arts There are many benefits to introducing children to their own art making practice including developing creativity, cognitive skills, fine motor skills, focus and confidence. Young people today are faced with an increasing number of challenges and art classes can provide a head start that they need to overcome those challenges. Classes will run for 6 week sessions beginning in November. After school classes will begin Thursday November 5, 2009 "Draw and Paint" for ages 5-8 from 3:45-4:45pm "Art for the Girls" for ages 9-13 from 6:00-7:15pm. Weekend classes will begin Saturday November 7, 2009 "Art for Tiny Hands" for ages 4-6 from 11:30-12:30pm "Art Around the World" for ages 7-12 from 1:30-2:30pm. Cost for each session is $90 and all art making materials are provided, register early as space is limited. Classes are taught by Ontario and NY state certified teacher and artist Ashley deRuiter. After completing a BA in Visual Arts from Brock University she went on to complete her graduate studies at Niagara University and earned a MSed for Primary/Junior divisions. deRuiter has over 4 years experience teaching art classes to students between the ages of 3 and 13.
