Oct. 18, 2009 - PRLog -- A question that every webmaster has been asking themselves recently is how to block google sidewiki?

This subject really is causing more distress amongst webmasters than I have witnessed for a very long time and the search for effective sidewiki blockers is something that seems to be dominating conversations.

If you have been living on a desert island and are not aware of what's going on let me put you up to date......

In it's wisdom Google has decided to release a new platform which enables the user to rate a website that the google toolbar is using and they have decided to name it 'Sidewiki'.

Sidewiki has been designed as an add on for IE and Firefox browsers but unfortunately the response from webmasters has not been as encouraging as first expected. I have no doubt that Google had everyone's best interests at heart but unfortunately it seems that they did not take into account the intentions of the less honest amongst us.

The main problem seems to be that some people are making derogatory posts on their competitors websites with the main aim of getting the visitors to leave that website.

Unfortunately it seems that there are also many other ways that the sidewiki can be abused. A website's competitors can post links in sidewiki to lure its visitors away and another tactic which is often used is that spammers are putting affiliate links in the sidewiki on the site. They have the content already in place (i.e. your content) which is the ideal setting for their affiliate links.

You can also find yourself in the position of people posting adult content on your site. Just imagine if you have a website which attracts families, it could ruin your reputation for ever. You really do not have any control over the content in your sidewiki and that really is frightening. Admittedly, google has a report link so you can check any content that has been added but they set it up so it works on a per page basis. If you have several websites or even one with just a few pages you have to ask yourself if you would really have the time to check each page. My guess is that you most definitely won't. To top it off, even if you do have the time to check all of these pages there is no guarantee that google will remove the offending comments.

As you can see there are many problems with sidewiki and you can't get away from the fact that google is having the final say on the content of your website.

Well, you don't have to allow big brother to take control. There is an answer in the form of  http://www.blocksidewiki.com  which allows you to block your visitors from having access to see these comments on your website that may be posted by spammers or your competition.

What this means is that when any visitors that have google toolbar installed with sidewiki visit your website they will only be able to leave comments but here's the twist, these comments will not be seen by anyone else.

Please don't under estimate the value of this as it is widely agreed by webmasters that the sidewiki has the potential to really harm your business.
