Delaware State Team Report-----------------------
DOVER, Del. (AP)—Kory Kowalski made a 40-yard field goal with 2:12 left as Bethune-Cookman defeated Delaware State 9-7 for its first victory of the season on Saturday night.
Jameel McCleod put the Wildcats (1-4, 1-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) on the board with a 46-yard pass from Jameel McCleod with 14:16 lef. Kowalski’s extra-point try was blocked.
Michael Williams intercepted a pass with 32 seconds left to seal the win.
Johnson was 15 of 22 for 218 yards and rushed for 67 yards.
Travis Tarpley returned the opening kickoff 85 yards to the 2-yard line and Jaashawn Jones scored on the next play for Delaware State (1-3, 1-2).
Jones had 71 yards on 13 carries for Delaware State and Nick Elko was 5-for-15 for 39 yards and one interception. He replaced Anthony Glaud, who was 5-for-10 for 32 yards and one interception before leaving with a first-half injury.
Michigan Team Report-----------------------------
Saddled with two straight losses, a few key injuries, and recurring inconsistency on both sides of the ball, the last thing the Wolverines need right now is more drama. There’s no time for a quarterback controversy, real or contrived.
But that’s where Michigan finds itself after the chaotic ending of its narrow 30-28 road loss to unbeaten Iowa. Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez has done his best to try and downplay the whole affair, but his decision to yank starter Tate Forcier in favor of his lesser-experienced freshman classmate Denard Robinson when the game reached ultimate crunch time has thrown gas on this fire.
Robinson led Michigan on a late touchdown drive, running the ball eight times for 42 yards and completing both passes he threw in that possession for 16 yards. After the Wolverines held Iowa and got the ball back, Rodriguez stayed with Robinson, despite the fact Forcier had led two comeback wins in his first five games.
When Robinson made a very ill-advised pass in the closing moments that Iowa intercepted to seal Michigan’s fate, the voices of second-guessing reached a cacophony. Rodriguez snarled at the media following the game, and made both of his freshman quarterbacks off-limits for interviews.
The second-year coach of the Wolverines now faces some of his most delicate work. He has to put his best offense out on the field, massage the confidence levels of his prized freshmen, and keep the rest of his team believing that Forcier and Robinson have what it takes to lead Michigan to success in the second half of the season.
• Michigan leads the Big Ten in scoring and is second in rushing.
• Michigan senior P Zoltan Mesko had the best outing of his career in the loss at Iowa, averaging 53.8 yards on five punts. Mesko knocked punts of 52, 53, 55 and 61 yards, and his 53.8-yard average is the second-best single-game performance in school history.
• The Wolverines roster shows five players from Grand Rapids— Obi Ezeh, Mark Huyge and Kevin Leach from Grand Rapids Catholic Central, and Kevin and Kelvin Grady from Grand Rapids East.
Series History: First meeting.
Scouting The Offense: The Wolverines lead the Big Ten in scoring (33 ppg.) and are second in rushing (197.33 avg.), and the three rushing touchdowns Michigan scored at Iowa should be an indicator that running the ball is a growing strength of this team. Michigan has rushed for 1,184 yards on 250 carries this season for a 4.7 yards per carry average.
Scouting The Defense: The Wolverines are showing signs of improving on this side of the ball, but it is hard to see those indicators when Michigan saddles itself with four turnovers like it did at Iowa. There has been an ongoing shuffle of personnel in the secondary, and the Wolverines seem closer to finding the right mix.
Quote To Note: “Words? There were no words (exchanged). Are we already going to try to create something that’s not there? We were coaching. I don’t know where that comes from.”— Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez firing back after being questioned about a sideline exchange he had with QB Tate Forcier late in the loss to Iowa
This Week ‘S GAME: Delaware State at Michigan, Oct. 17—The Wolverines (4-2) step out of the Big Ten for a week and take on the Hornets, who are 1-3 after losses to Bethune-Cookman, Delaware and Florida A&M. Delaware State’s lone win came three weeks ago, 21-6 over Hampton.
Keys To The Game: This meeting with a struggling team from what was traditionally the Division II level comes at just the right time for Michigan. The Wolverines need to rely on their significant edge in both size and talent to prevail, and snap their two-game losing streak. Michigan should be able to run the ball almost at will, and finally take the heat off its defense.
RB Carlos Brown—The Wolverines’ leading rusher with 336 yards on 44 carries, Brown did not travel with the team for the Iowa game after suffering a concussion in practice. Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said he hopes to have Brown back in the lineup, if his headaches subside.
QB Denard Robinson—The “other freshman” in the Michigan quarterback scene, Robinson carried eight times for 42 yards on Michigan’s late touchdown drive that got the Wolverines within two points at Iowa. His passing blunder ended Michigan’s shot at winning the game in the closing moments.
QB Tate Forcier—The freshman who has started all six Michigan games this season has two fourth-quarter comeback victories to his credit, and also led the Wolverines on a pair of touchdown drives in the fourth quarter at Michigan State to push that game to overtime.
• QB Tate Forcier suffered a mild concussion late in the loss at Iowa, and was still experiencing headaches on Monday. Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said Forcier would start this week against Delaware State, if he returns to full participation in practice by Wednesday.
• CB Boubacar Cissoko did not make the trip to Iowa after he was suspended for a violation of team rules. Cissoko started the first four games at right cornerback, but did not play last week against Michigan State. UM coach Rich Rodriguez said Cissoko had “on and off the field” issues to resolve, including academic concerns.
• DB Troy Woolfolk tweaked his ankle in the Iowa loss but is expected to be available for this week’s game.
• PK Jason Olesnavage had a heavy bandage on his left foot following the Iowa game and was walking with a significant limp. Any injury to Olesnavage was not reported by Michigan on Monday when it started preparations for the Delaware State game.
