Take GEN’s Latest $1,500 Contest to Decipher Biology’s Cryptic Nature

New Rochelle, NY—If thrillers like The Da Vinci Code and The Lost Symbol have enthralled you, then GEN’s latest mind-boggling challenge will certainly stimulate your brain. Along with partner Scintellix, LLC and sponsor Invitrogen, part of Life Technologies Corporation, we bring you the Cryptogram Challenge: ELISA Redux.
The huge response we received during the Microarray Challenge, which ran at the end of last year, as well as this September's Cryptogram Challenge, prompted us to launch another online puzzle with a $1,500 prize. The winner will also be able to choose an Invitrogen benchtop device from five products that range in value from $950 to $5,000. Additionally, he or she will be featured in Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News (GEN) (http://www.genengnews.com).

To start testing your mental acuity, register now at www.genengnews.com/ElisaReduxChallenge (http://www.genengnews.com/ElisaReduxChallenge/). The first 150 people to register will get a T-shirt depicting the ELISA Redux image.

"We are so very excited that our Challenges have received such a tremendous following!" says Joan Boyce, group publisher for GEN. "This next one will prove to be the toughest yet, and we look forward to congratulating the winner with a $1,500 prize and their choice of one benchtop device (from a selection of five) from the Challenge sponsor, Invitrogen."

GEN and Scintellix have formed a partnership to explore the hidden meaning found in biological imagery. The Cryptogram Challenge: ELISA Redux is the third installment of the partnership. Peter C. Johnson, M.D., president and CEO of Scintellix, is once again the mastermind behind the cryptogram. He has encoded a message into an ELISA plate image, called ELISA Redux, based on the color of each well.

"ELISA Redux is a direct follow on to the recently solved ELISA-focused Cryptogram Challenge," says Dr. Johnson. "ELISA Redux is designed to test different skills, and although it is monochromatic, it provides witness to the fact that looks can be deceiving."

Here’s a clue to help you out: The solution is a unique verbal statement. The color shown is not trivial.

We’ll reveal another clue on October 19 and every Monday thereafter until the contest is solved. The winner will not only win $1,500 but will also be able to choose one of the following pieces of equipment from Invitrogen’s portfolio: The Neon Transfection Device, iBlot® Dry Blotting System, BenchPro™ 4100 Western Processing System, Countess Automated Cell Counter, or Qubit™ fluorometer. For details about these products, visit the Cryptogram Challenge (http://www.genengnews.com/elisareduxchallenge/the_sponso ...).

"Invitrogen is happy to continue supporting GEN’s Cryptogram Challenge: ELISA Redux because of the level of interest it has generated in the research community," says Balwant Patel, Ph.D., Director Market Development at Invitrogen. "For this challenge we have added two more Invitrogen devices to the prize that the winner can choose from—the Countess Automated Cell Counter and Qubit™ fluorometer—so I wish everyone luck, and we are hoping even more people will take part in this intellectual challenge."
