New information published by the ONS this week shows that unemployment continues to rise whilst the number of advertised vacancies remains unchanged. There are only 434,000 vacancies whilst unemployment has risen to 2.47 million, the highest since April 1997.
‘Unemployment amongst mid-senior managers and professionals has hit harder than ever before,’ says Jo Rawcliffe, Regional Director of PCS Executive. ‘The trend in our client base has shifted dramatically since the recession hit with the majority of our clients turning to us following redundancy, people are really struggling with the current market.’
Statistics from 2005-2007 showed that 70% of PCS’s clients were already in a role when they started a career development programme, with only 30% of clients embarking on a programme due to unemployment. Figures from the last 18 months display quite the opposite – nearly 70% of people who approached PCS during this time were unemployed.
