Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a very common and dangerous condition which can lead to many complications including heart disease, arrhythmia, high blood pressure, and stroke. The Surgical Institute for Sleep Apnea has formed because of the overwhelming evidence that although CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) remains the initial standard treatment for patients who suffer from OSA; less than 50% of patients tolerate CPAP. Patients who will be evaluated by the team at the Surgical Institute for Sleep Apnea will have already undergone a sleep study for symptoms of snoring and sleep apnea, and have also attempted CPAP as a form of treatment.
For the first time in Dallas, a multidisciplinary team offers a surgical alternative to those who have failed CPAP. Dr. Timothy Trone, Dr. Tom Hung, and Dr. Andy Chung of the Dallas ENT Group offer a tongue and hyoid suspension procedure which has shown a 78% success rate.
Dr. David Genecov and Dr. Raul Carlos Barcelo of the International Craniofacial Institute offer a procedure called Maxillomandibular Advancement Surgery (MMA). This procedure involves moving the upper and lower jaw forward to enlarge the entire airway and has a documented success rate of 90%.
Dr. Jeff Genecov of Genecov Orthodontics is also be a part of the multidisciplinary team that makes up the Surgical Institute for Sleep Apnea. For patients who cannot tolerate or choose not to continue with CPAP; an oral appliance might be the answer. Dr. Genecov uses the Herbst Appliance which has proven to be effective on chronic snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea sufferers.
