Celebrate Rock ‘n’ Roll
WHAT: Set at Bimbo’s 365 Club, a venue as famous as the musicians who have rocked its stage, Celebrate Rock ‘n’ Roll will pay tribute to the history of San Francisco’s amazing rock ‘n’ roll music scene. Celebrate Rock ‘n’ Roll is the premier event accompanying the Museum’s acclaimed new exhibition, Somethin’s Happening Here: Bay Area Rock ‘n’ Roll 1963-1973.
Just Announced:
The highlight of the evening will be a performance by original 1960s psychedelic rock band, Quicksilver Messenger Service. The band will be joined by Cold Blood, another seminal band from the 1960s Bay Area rock scene. In addition, the party will feature a special guest appearance by singer, songwriter, and producer Narada Michael Walden and special emcee Ben Fong-Torres.
Celebrate Rock ‘n’ Roll will be an energetic, sophisticated evening featuring a cocktail reception, dinner catered by Dan McCall, drinks, and dancing. At nine p.m., a live performance will begin with Quicksilver Messenger Service. The band’s latest line up includes original members Gary Duncan and David Freiberg, plus Prairie Prince (of The Tubes) and Bobby Vega (played with Sly and the Family Stone, Jefferson Starship, and The Grateful Dead.) Quicksilver will be joined by Cold Blood, an important group on the 1960s scene that blends rock, jazz, and soul. Both bands are internationally renowned, and featured on the recent DVD release Last Days of the Fillmore (2009, Rhino). Proceeds from Celebrate Rock ‘n’ Roll will support Bay Area performing arts education and preservation at the Museum of Performance & Design. Song & Dance is the Museum’s third annual performing arts gala.

Somethin’s Happening Here: Bay Area Rock ‘n’ Roll 1963-73 at the Museum of Performance & Design (MPD) charts the Bay Area rock scene from the folk-infused early ‘60s to the last days of the Fillmore West. The exhibition is an unprecedented, in-depth examination of this incredibly diverse era—dispelling its myths and offering a fresh look at this well-known subject—all evoked in a blaze of sight and sound with a wealth of original posters, images, instruments, and costumes on display.
