Manchester
On Tuesday 20th October, the Manchester Debating Union is hosting a public debate on assisted suicide.
Four high-profile speakers will attend the debate: Sarah Wootton, the Chief Executive of Dignity in Dying, and Edward Turner, a Dignity in Dying board member, will propose the legalisation of assisted suicide for the terminally ill. Opposing will be Dominica Roberts from the Pro-Life Alliance, and a representative from ALERT.
This ground-breaking event brings representatives of three key pressure groups face to face:
· Dignity in Dying campaigns for greater choice, control and access to services at the end of life. Alongside its campaigning work, Dignity in Dying is also a major information source on end-of-life issues and a leading provider of Advance Directives ("living wills") in the UK.
· The ProLife Alliance is a human rights group who campaign against euthanasia as well as abortion, human cloning and experiments on embryos.
· ALERT (Against Legalised Euthanasia – Research and Training) campaigns against any form of euthanasia legislation, including Advance Directives.
The debate will take place at 5pm at the University of Manchester Students Union. Each of the four speakers will make a speech, after which members of the public have the chance to ask questions and make points of their own. The event should last around two hours.
