His first made-for-TV movie The Jericho Mile won him an Emmy in 1979 as well as the DGA Best Director award. He took the plunge into film direction in 1981 with the movie Thief, which he had written and on which he worked as an Executive Producer too. Whatever he did after that became a part of history. His 1986 movie Manhunter was highly acclaimed by the critics for Michael’s writing and direction skills. 1990s saw three of his movies; The Last of the Mohicans, Heat and The Insider hitting the screens each of which he had written, produced and directed. In these he handled some of the biggest names in the Hollywood and established himself as someone who just like the Yacht-Master II was best in each job that he undertook.
The next decade was even more successful for the talented Michael Mann. His 1991 movie Ali was a tribute to the legendary Muhammad Ali played by Will Smith in the movie. Collateral was another successful movie that came out in the year 2004. The same year came The Aviator the historical saga, his second after Ali, about legendary Howard Hughes. He was a producer on the movie directed by Martin Scorsese which had DiCaprio playing the lead. His next movies Miami Vice, The Kingdom and Hancock were huge blockbusters making him a part of the most successful producers and directors. His latest offering Public Enemies is once again a cinematic depiction of the real life incidents that took place in US leading up to setting up of the FBI.
