Angel Cabrera Ready For Second PGA Golf Grand Slam Appearance in 2009

Perhaps the elder statesman of the PGA Grand Slam this year, Angel Cabrera is also the choice of many experts and pundits to win.

Oct. 13, 2009 - PRLog -- With several professional tournament wins over the last 15 years, and as the winner of the Masters in 2009 and U.S. Open in 2007, Cabrera has something that the other competitors in this year’s Grand Slam do not have.  He’s been there before.  And he’s won it.

Angel Cabrera was the winner of the 2007 PGA Grand Slam of Golf, which was played at the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda.  This years Grand Slam remains on Bermuda, but moves across the island to the recently renovated Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton.

It’s been a long road to the Grand Slam’s and tournament victories though.  Angel Cabrera was abandoned by his parents at the age of three and dropped out of grade school to take on work that he needed to survive on, which includes work as a caddie on the Cordoba Country Club Golf Course in Argentina.  But from an early age, many locals at the Cordoba noticed that he was serious about golf.  Local golfers and club members funded him financially in the early days so he could participate in local tournaments.  It wasn’t long before he started qualifying for the Paraguay and Colombian opens’ and in 1996, he won the Volvo Masters of Latin America.

Since 1999, Cabrera has moved to the European tour and more recently the PGA tour.  Ranked in the top 10 at various points in his career, he is also the only active PGA Tour member (other than Tiger Woods) to have won the U.S. Open and the Masters.  He’s also helped train younger Argentine golfers, such as top 20 ranked golfer Andres Romero, while his oldest son Federico is a promising young golfer who qualified for the 2006 Amateur championship and has made some European open appearances in 2008 and 2009.

Cabrera made it to this years Grand Slam of Golf by winning the Masters, beating Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell in a playoff.  As a result, one of the four spots in the PGA Grand Slam is his.  Competing against him are three first timers to the tournament - Y.E. Yang, Angel Cabrera and Stewart Cink.

Find out how it all unfolds by visiting the Port Royal Golf website at http://www.portroyalgolf.bm - where you can read more about each of the players, or view close up shots of each hole on the golf course.

And if you can’t make it to Bermuda in October, Port Royal has partnered with Imagine Golf Club, with a game that simulates the scenic 16th hole of the course, where the best scores can win prizes, including a holiday for two to Bermuda!  Play the Port Royal game at http://www.imaginegolfclub.com/games.htm
