TIPS from Melinda Myers: Winterize Your Landscape and Prepare for a Beautiful Spring
Save time, money and energy by recycling fall leaves right in your landscape. Shredded leaves (as long as you can see the grass) can be left on the lawn to add nutrients and organic matter to the soil. Dig left over shredded fall leaves into vacant gardens or spread on the soil around perennials as a mulch.
Leave perennials stand for increased winter survival and to provide habitat for beneficial insects, food for the birds and winter interest for you to enjoy
Protect broadleaf and newly planted evergreens from winter’s drying winds and sun. Use fabric, decorative fencing or other items to create shade and windbreaks for these and other sensitive plants.
Dig in shredded leaves, compost or other organic matter into annual flower and vegetables gardens to improve the soil for greater beauty and productivity next season.
Increase plant survival and reduce winter injury by watering evergreens, new plantings and all your landscape plants thoroughly before the ground freezes.
And don’t forget to keep planting. Planting bulbs, trees and shrubs gives you a colorful start to next years landscape improvements.
