About Travel Nursing:
Did you know that on a daily basis there are approximately 15,000-20,000 travel nurses working in U.S. hospitals? And that there are twice as many nurses who have traveled EXSPENSES PAID TRAVEL AND HOUSING! PLEASE EMAIL YOUR NAME AND MESSAGE PHONE before and may again?
If you are reading this you are likely exploring the travel nursing profession. By becoming a traveler, you are joining an elite group of nurses that make up only 1% of the general nursing population of 2.7 million, yet play a vital role in healthcare across the country.
Travel nurse placement is a relatively recent development in healthcare staffing. Due to the current nursing shortage, many facilities now use travel nurses. The U.S. government expects the national nurse shortage to hit 800,000 by 2020. This number is up from the nurse shortage of 110,000 in 2000. The demand for travel nurses is very high and positions are available in a variety of specialties.
One reason for the current shortage relates to the age of the current nursing population. Today the average age of a RN is 42. Many of these nurses are planning to retire in the next several years leaving a substantial number of unfilled nursing positions. Additionally, there are simply not enough newly graduated nurses available to fill the void that is being left behind. In response to the critical loss of nursing professionals, travel nursing has become an essential part of staffing healthcare facilities.
An additional reason for the surge in travel nursing opportunities relates to the state mandated nurse-to-patient ratios. California became the first state to require a 5 to 1 nurse to patient ratio recently with other states soon to follow. With the lower ratios, the need for additional nurses to provide quality healthcare has increased substantially and facilities have had to look at travel nurses as an option to meet the demand.
The average annual earnings for all full-time employed RNs are $46,782. Travel nurse salaries (employed by staffing companies) vary by experience, location and specialty, but generally run $22-$35 per hour. This means that a travel nurse working 40-hours per week, 50 weeks a year would earn $44,000-$77,000. A travel nurse in California will earn up to $100,000 a year with overtime.
In general nurses begin traveling for a variety of reasons including increased pay rate, freedom to travel to new locations, flexibility in time on the job and variety in assignments that prevents professional burnout.
