Shalor (7) and Hunter (10) rest after a fast and furious set up of their Sumner Street Haunt. "We've almost got it done," says Hunter. "Only a few more lighting tweaks and getting the other fog machine out. And, the skeletons on the roof. And, the sound effects machine..."
"Yeah, we're not done yet!" Shalor smiles.
Weather delays and soccer practice delayed the start of what is now a four year old annual tradition. Over the course of the month of October, this little New England cape house gets transformed into a haunted graveyard, complete with skeletons and hand made gravestones.
"It started out as a little diy project, to see if we could build some gravestones that didn't look mass produced." says Matt McKee, father of the two boys and a local commercial photographer. "And then we got a bit carried away. Now, its a family tradition and everyone gets involved."
"It's a fun way to get the neighborhood together." Julie, mother and a teacher in the Dover-Sherborn schools grins at the memories. "All of the neighborhood kids and parents would meet up at our house to start the trick or treat tour and end back here for some hot coco and to divy up the loot!"
Brianna Shephard, from across the street, looks forward to the display every year. "It's cool and creative. And, we get to help out sometimes, too."
Shalor looks over the yard, "We got some stuff to do still, but, we'll be ready by Halloween!"
The Sumner Street Haunters will be on active display the week before Halloween. Matt will also be face painting at the Avery School's Spooktacular on Friday the 30th.
