India - Singapore Air Connectivity Takes Off

Singapore which is serving as the transport hub of South East Asia (SEA) witnesses a surge in connectivity especially between India and the rest of SEA via Changi, the renowned State of the art Airport of the Island state.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)Oct 13, 2009 – As the trade and economic interactions between India and the South East Asia increases there is a growing need for improved connectivity between the various destinations. Singapore which is serving as the transport hub of South East Asia (SEA) witnesses a surge in connectivity especially between India and the rest of SEA via Changi, the renowned State of the art Airport of the Island state.

Airlines operating in the sectors connecting Key Indian cities with Singapore have increased the connectivity or forge partnerships to bring value for money deals to the passengers. Some of the airlines that have till now overlooked the sector have now unveiled plans to commence service shortly.

India’s Kingfisher Airlines will commence service between Mumbai-Singapore starting from 17th September and the airline has just commenced service to Hong Kong. The Mumbai-Singapore flight, IT 029, will take off from Mumbai at 23:05 and arrive in Singapore at 07:05 am. From Singapore, the return flight IT 030 will leave at 10:15 and arrive at 13:05 in Mumbai. Tiger Airways will be increasing its flights to Chennai, India from October 25. In addition to the existing daily flights, customers will have options to four additional weekly flights. With total flights being raised from seven to 11 weekly, available seating capacity will be 4,000 per week. Tiger also flies to Bangalore five times a week. In total, with the impending increase in frequency, the carrier will have 32 flights per week between Singapore and India.

The latest development is the partnership between Air India and Singapore Airlines. According to the agreement, frequent flyer programme members of both airlines are able to earn and redeem miles on flights operated by either carrier. Thus members of Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer programme can now earn KrisFlyer miles when they fly with Air India, or choose to redeem their miles for flights with the Indian carrier. Similarly, members of Air India’s Flying Returns programme will enjoy greater choice by having the option of using their miles on Singapore Airlines flights or earning miles when they fly on Singapore Airlines.

Changi serves 13 Indian cities and presently there are 8 Airlines serving these destinations. This reflects the growing passenger traffic between the two countries on account of business and leisure; it could be more from the former than the latter. Trade between the two countries has significantly appreciated post CECA implementation and there is a growing number of Indian Entrepreneurs who venture into Singapore to leverage on the unique opportunities that the island state offers. Similarly many of the local enterprises and regional enterprises are also lured by the market size, venture into India. Many Indian High Net worth individuals find Singapore ideal to park their surpluses in real properties and other investment instruments. Such developments translates into increased passenger traffic in the sector, and as a chain reaction, we can expect the connectivity to boom further in the future, which will inturn escalate the trade and economic engagements between the two markets.
